Mirror, Mirror
Do you ever hide your feelings in order to get through the stressful or more painful events in life?
“Mirror, Mirror on the wall,
who’s the fairest of them all?”
Am I what you see in reality?
Or am I the reflection, mirroring me?
Within this life
the pendulum swings,
from good to bad,
from chaotic to serene.
In the blink of an eye
in the flash of a second,
events unfold
we are helpless to change them.
As swiftly as the winds blow
over the depths of the sea,
events in our lives are altered
depending upon the breeze.
Fair winds and blue skies
of such we desire to dream,
when within reality our life rests,
within the truth of everyday living.
Faced with a crisis
like a sand crab I retreat,
hiding my feelings
as the crab hides in sand beneath the sea.
Protecting my heart
from the moment a crisis occurs,
being an actress until it becomes clear
which way to turn.
Life is like a game of chess
which piece do I move?
Do I move the Queen?
Or is it the King I preserve?
What will be the outcome
depending on each move?
A Golden Globe I could win
hiding my feelings, being a ruse.
One day at a time
there are two of me that reside -
one is the actress that everyone sees,
the other you must look deeper,
beneath the surface of me.
A poem written by Laney Mills in which I describe how I handle sad or bad news.. Enjoy!

Laney, the sand crab image does a lot of work here, it captures something true about protective retreat that most writing on this topic misses entirely. That final turn, the actress everyone sees against the self that requires looking deeper, lands with real weight.
The chess metaphor earlier sets it up well too, that question of which piece to preserve. Thank you for sharing something this honest.
