Before The Party
A poetic story of love, engagement, and a fiancé's appreciation of the woman he loves.

Before the party,
my day was consumed
with last minute details,
the month was June.
I wanted everything to be perfect!
He would be here soon.
We were announcing our engagement.
The thought of him made me swoon.
Between us, love flourished.
I had never felt so “one”.
Devotion was not an issue.
It was a fact I could not ignore.
The florist gathered cut flowers
from the perennials in my backyard.
Into the sink she placed them,
then in glass vases galore.
The vases were placed strategically
throughout my home for color.
The aroma of the flowers was heavenly.
The petals brightened up each hour.
Sunflowers, Roses, and Gardenias.
Giant Magnolia Blossoms by the gallon.
Their sweet scent was like a song,
wafting in and out of each room.
Then came a knock at the door,
I ran to see who it was.
A courier stood before me
with a package requiring a name.
It was a blue bag from Tiffany’s —
I whispered, “My word, is he insane?”
I took the bag in my hand
I couldn’t wait to see what it contained!
Inside the bag was a box.
Within the box, a diamond necklace.
I could hardly believe it was true.
The pendant was in the shape of a flower,
a design so delicate, conveying his love so true.
Sparkling with tiny diamonds,
I had never seen anything like it.
Speaking to my heart with passion.
Speaking to my heart with love.
I opened the card that accompanied it —
In his handwriting, he wrote…
“To me, you are like a flower, beautiful in every way. Like the diamonds, I know your beauty will never fade. Because inside you are not only beautiful but also strong. Strong, kind, gentle, and lovely — which is why I want you forevermore.”
“Here’s to us and our future together. See you soon, love.”
With a smile on my face,
I put the necklace on,
ran up the stairs,
and called my mother.
“Mother, you will never believe
the gift delivered to me
before the party.”A fun little poetic story by Laney Mills. Thank you so much for reading!
